Air India Baggage Allowance
Every airline company has their own rules and regulations for baggage allowance. We all know that Air India is regulated by government body. Because of this, Air India Baggage Allowance is slightly different from other private airline companies.
Today, I am going to answer the most asked questions on air india baggage allowance.
How much hand/cabin baggage I can carry with me?
Each passenger is allowed to carry 8 kg of hand baggage on board. You are permitted to bring two pieces of carry-on baggage including one bag plus one personal item such as a laptop bag, or briefcase. All carry-on luggage must fit either under the seat or in the overhead cabin.
Also, given below is the maximum dimension of carry-on luggage as per the aircraft you are flying
- For Boeing & Airbus aircraft: The handbag may not exceed 55cm x 35cm x 25cm- Total 115cms.
- For ATR/CRJ aircraft: The size of carry-on baggage may not exceed 55cm x35cm x 20cm- Total 110 cms.
However, children are entitled to the same cabin baggage allowance as adults.
In addition, I would like to inform you that due to security purpose, passenger traveling on flights originating from Jammu, Srinagar, etc. are not allowed to carry any hand baggage.
What is my allowance for Checked baggage?
A Passenger traveling on the Air India can check-in as many pieces of baggage. You are eligible for baggage allowance of 25kgs for Adult/Children and 10kgs for Infant for all domestic sectors. If an individual baggage exceeds the total dimensions greater than 204 cms (80 inches), it can’t be checked-in as baggage. In this case, it will be charged as per the excess baggage or you need to be sent your luggage as cargo.
When you are flying with Air India to and from destinations outside, you can go through with the following checked baggage allowances:
- First Class- 40kgs. (8Ibs)
- Executive Class- 30 Kgs. (66lbs)
- Economy Class- 20 Kgs. (44lbs)
- Infants in all classes- 10 Kgs. (22lbs)
As per the Air India rule, the maximum weight of Checked baggage is allowed for a single piece is 32 kgs.
NOTE: Free Baggage Allowance of International sector will be applied, if passenger is traveling on the Air India domestic sector and connecting to Air India International sector or vice versa only on the same ticket.
What if my baggage exceeds the limitation?
If your baggage exceeds the Free Baggage allowance, you need to pay excess baggage charges as per your luggage weight.
For Domestic sector within India, the amount of excess baggage is INR 250 per excess baggage ticket.
For International sector; travel from India to USA, if your excess baggage is more than 23kgs up to 32 kgs (51-70 lbs).
